10 Most Absurdly Priced Food Items!

Chocolate and diamond

It is surprising how much people will pay for extravagant food that is supposedly special. Great eye opener for the health nut I am.  I have collected some of the most outrageous and most expensive foods in the world.

1.  Ready to order a $4,200 Pizza?

Yep you can get a 12 inch pizza packed with some of the world’s most expensive food ingredients (lobster marinated in cognac, caviar soaked in champagne).  The best bit is that it has edible 24-carat gold flakes sprinkled on top.  This most expensive pizza is created by Gordon Ramsay’s Maze restaurant in London. Hmm… do you think you can get that gluten free?

2.  Most Expensive Cake for $52 million!

This six tier high cake is almost five feet tall!  It is decorated with over 2000 diamonds which is equivalent to 2046 carats. We jumped at the opportunity to create the world’s most expensive wedding cake.”  Said Tim and Jules Smith who own Cake, a bakery in Chester, England.  Here’s a photo Cake tweeted

3. Alba White Truffles for $330,000

White truffles are the second most expensive food by weight. They are high on the gourmet chef’s list of important ingredients.  It grows only under specific oak trees in Alba, Italy and their odour is considered to be an aphrodisiac.  This odour is sulphurous which means they stink! Dogs and female pigs are used to hunt this precious truffle.

Stanley Ho purchased two truffles, just under 3 pounds for $330,000.

  4.  One watermelon for $6,100

Ok this is no average red watermelon.  It is a rare black watermelon called Densuke which is only grown on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.   “The watermelons aren’t really black, they are dark green. They just look black when the sun isn’t shining directly on them.”  Says rvalens2 who grew them in Idaho at I Dig My Garden.Y

You cannot usually buy one.  They are mostly given as gifts. If anyone would like to ‘gift me’  one, (just kidding) I love watermelons for their taste and health benefits.

5. Most Expensive Bagel for $1,000

That price includes a donation to the Les Amis d’Escoffier Scholarship for current and future culinary students.   It includes white truffles, cream cheese and goji berry infused Riesling jelly,  and of course topped with edible golden leaves.  This is the creation of Executive Chef Frank Tujague at Westin Hotels.  This is one the cheapest item on my list but I’m sorry it is no longer available to order.

6.  Ice at $7.50 a cube!

Do you want ice that is a meticulously designed?  That takes 45 minutes to melt? Gläce Luxury Ice created for use in premium drinks and cocktails. This is high-class ice!

Actually they are not cubes, they’re perfect spheres of ice made from purified water and exactly 2.5 inches in diameter which is high level fancy for drinks.

saffron

7.  Saffron, most expensive spice in the world

It has been sold for as much as $2,700 per pound.  It is so expensive as it must be harvested by hand and it takes more than 75,000 threads, for one pound of the spice. High-quality saffron can cost as much as $15 per gram. This is one item whose price seems the most ‘reasonable’ to me – considering its uniqueness and health benefits.

8.  Almas Caviar – $25,000 for a Kilo

It comes from Iran making it extremely rare. Almas caviar comes from sturgeons that are between 60 and 100 years old.  There is only one place to buy it: the Caviar House & Prunier in London England’s Picadilly.   It comes in a 24-karat gold tin for $25,000.

Wild Kopi Luwak Coffee Beans

9.  Wild Kopi Luwak Coffee for $3,000 per kilo

This is one very odd expensive food.

It is created when small animals eat regular coffee beans and poop them out!  On the jungle floor on the island of Sumatra the beans are collected and processed. It is apparently richer than typical coffee, with a chocolate undertone.

I’m not a coffee drinker myself for several reasons and make my own dandelion coffee for free!

10.  Most Expensive Dessert The Frrrozen Haute Chocolate  for $25,000

This ice cream sundae is a blend of 28 cocoas, (14 of the most expensive in the world).  Then it decorated with edible gold and served in a goblet lined with edible gold. At the bottom of the sundae, there is an 18 karat gold bracelet with 1 carat of diamonds. You eat the sundae, with a gold spoon decorated in white and chocolate diamonds that you get to take home after your indulgence. Serendipity 3, New York serves it.

What’s Your Reaction?

Personally, I love food so I am attracted to a few exotic items on the list, but I am shocked/disgusted by some of the excesses.

If money was not an issue which one of these would you like on your menu?

Which do you think was the most absurd?

  1. Hi Diana,

The link to the strawberry peach ice cream takes one to a login for WordPress, for your site, I believe. Could you please fix it so I may make it; it sounds delicious.

    Thanks, Riesah
